For your Valentine

For your Valentine

One day in the perfect environment of the garden of Eden God made an incredible statement, “It is not good that the man should be alone…” Genesis 2:18a. What was wrong in the garden that provokes such a radical statement?  If you recall, the passage indicates that God walked with Adam in the cool of the night.  It seems that God made us human in such a way that we need someone like us to relate to. Scientific studies in attachment indicate that as human beings we have “the propensity to make strong affectional bonds to particular others…”  These studies further indicate that, “the many forms of emotional distress and disturbance, which include anxiety, anger, and depression,” are the result of “unwilling separation and loss.” Bowlby

Neurobiology further emphasizes such need, when Cozolino writes that, “Scientists have had to expand their thinking to grasp this idea: The individual neuron or a single human brain does not exist in nature. Without mutually stimulating interactions, people and neurons wither and die. In neurons this process is called apoptosis; in humans it is called depression, grief, and suicide…. Relationships are our natural habitat.”

Make this Valentine not just a day, but a commitment to connect with your mate and children in a way that they feel as a priority to you.
